Harris History Update

Hi Everyone:

I hope you had a great weekend. Here is the latest update:

P1 and 4: Students will submit their WWI letter to me tomorrow. They should have a draft that has been assessed by 2 peers. If there are printer issues at home, students can bring the assignment on a usb drive or email the assignment to themselves.

P2 American: Student groups were investigating various causes of the American Revolution today. My recommendation to students was to read about 3 or 4 of them tonight and fill in the relevant sections of the organizer, then complete the remaining 3 or 4 tomorrow. Though each cause will be covered in a student presentation, it’s always best to read the information first-hand to really cement understanding (or generate questions).

Have a great evening.

Harris History Update

Hi Everyone:

I hope you have all taken the opportunity to get outside at least a little bit over the past couple of days. What a great week of weather.

P1 and P4 students should have their WWI battles research page done by tomorrow. They can access the textbook online to complete the research or use a reliable online source like Veterans Affairs Canada. We will write the drafts of the letters in class tomorrow. There will be a self and peer assessment of the letters on Monday and the final draft will be due Tuesday.

P2 American: Students will receive their Pocahontas essays back tomorrow. The students should be able to tell you why the French and Indian War and Pontiac’s Revolt were historically significant. No homework tonight.

Enjoy the sun while it’s here!

Harris History: Monday

Hi Everyone:

I hope you all had a great weekend. Here is the latest update from room 128:

P1/4 History: Students will write their first quiz tomorrow. It will cover the causes of WWI, why Canada became involved and trench warfare. I have attached some review slides to assist in the study process. If students are going to Catapult or the Peer Mentor retreat, they will have to write the quiz at lunch on Thursday. The P4 class received the instructions for our WWI writing activity today. P1 will receive it tomrrow. We will do the battles research in class on Tuesday and Wednesday, then begin to write the rough draft on Wednesday. Peer editing will take place Thursday and the good copy will be due on Monday or Tuesday of next week (remember it’s a PD day this Friday). Students who are absent due to Peer Mentoring or Catapult should go ahead and use the online textbook or other reliable online sources to complete the battles research (an organizer was provided in class to P4 today). All other students do not have homework as the bulk of the work will be done in class.

P2 History: Students made post-it note concept maps about slavery today. Quizzes were also returned, so please ask your son or daughter about the results. No homework tonight.

Harris History: Weekend Edition

I hope you all have a great weekend. No homework for any of my classes. Just a reminder that my grade 10 classes will write their first quiz on Tuesday. Any students in P4 who are demitted for Catapult will have to write the quiz at lunch on Tuesday. The quiz will cover the causes of WWI and why Canada became involved, as well as trench warfare.

Take care and have fun!

Harris History Update

Hi Everyone:

I have had meetings for 2 days in a row, so there were no homework updates. Hopefully any withdrawl symptoms that anyone experienced have subsided 🙂

Just a reminder that the pink and blue forms that were sent home last Friday are due back tomorrow (homeroom only). Also, the United Way football game takes place tomorrow morning at TD.

P1 and P4 students should be able to explain to you both the long-term and short-term causes of WWI, why Canada became involved and some aspects of trench warfare. Our first quiz will likely be on Tuesday of next week and it will cover those topics. Our first major writing task will begin tomorrow for P4 and Monday for P1 (due to the football game in the morning). No homework for either class tonight.

P2 American: We began to discuss slavery in the colonial period. Ask your son or daughter to list 3 things that were brought up in class today regarding this topic. No homework for them either.

Tomorrow is Friday and Fridays are awesome. Have a great evening.

Parent Request follow-up

Dear Parents:

I may have jumped the gun on my request for volunteers. We may have enough student teachers to make our ratio; however, if we are still in need and you would like to help, the only hurdle to clear is a police check that, apparently can be done for a reduced school rate. I will keep you all posted. Thanks to those who already expressed interest!

Harris History Update (and a plea for parent volunteers!)

Hi Everyone:

I hope you all had a great weekend and that your week started off well. Here is a quick breakdown of the day here:

P1 and P4: We began researching the causes of WWI. Students should access the online text tonight to finish this research task. Also, we are trying to plan a field trip to the Fanshawe Pioneer Village for their WWI Education Day that takes place October 21st for the entire day. Due to the large number of students, we will require between 4-6 parent chaperones to keep our adult to student ratio in check. Parents do not have to pay for admission and can drive to and from the Village (the bus driver counts as a chaperone at that time). If you are able to assist us, please let us know as we cannot book the trip unless supervision is sorted out first. Thanks.

P2 American: We looked at the Salem Witch scare today and students wrote a Unit 1 quiz. No homework (unless the Pocahontas essay is still not finished and uploaded to turnitin.com).
