Harris History Update (it’s back!)

Here is the latest as we head into the weekend.

P1: Students were required to submit their WWI letters today. The test is Wednesday so an initial review of the notes should take place sooner rather than later. No homework otherwise.

P3: I forgot to mention that the first unit test was returned on Wednesday. Students should make sure that the presentation handout and slides are uploaded to the e-learning site. Their research organizer must be uploaded as well. Presentations conclude on Monday.

P4: Unit 1 test written today. Most students have already uploaded their I am democracy democracy poem and explanation to the e-learning site. This should be done over the weekend if it has not been done already.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Harris History Update

Hi Everyone:

I have some bad news to report. You might want to sit down for this. I won’t be issuing an update tomorrow. I’m at a meeting in St. Thomas all day Thursday, so I won’t be able to let you know how the day went. As such, you can save this message and read it tomorrow to keep consistency in the routine.

I had to insert some humour to begin; nothing seemed to go ‘right’ for me today, so all I can do is laugh and hope that the next day is better. Hopefully your day was/is better than mine 🙂 By the way, it was NOT because of the students, so don’t jump to any conclusions and ground anyone.

P1: We did the peer editing today, which I thought went really well. I also asked students to self-assess their work. Since I’m not in the building tomorrow, they can hang on to the letters until Friday. I also forgot to mention yesterday that I handed back the first quiz. Results were mixed, so study skills and test preparation may need to be addressed before next Wednesday’s unit test. Students have no homework, other than putting finishing touches on the letter.

P3: Students had the period to work on their Mesopotamian presentation. Productivity was not great, so most of the rest of the work will have to be completed outside of class. I will probably build in some conference time for students to coordinate their ideas tomorrow, but they won’t have a full class. Students should continue working on the task tonight and tomorrow night. My hope is that, because it’s a brief presentation (5 minutes), students will have it memorized. Maybe ask them how much they still have to do on the project tonight.

P4: Students worked really hard to complete their democracy poems and explanations. We had some technology glitches, but the kids responded well. The first unit test is Friday and they have preparation materials in their notebooks. I would like them to bring the article I distributed to them in class yesterday to the test on Friday for reference. The poems should be uploaded to my online dropbox along with the explanation sheet as soon as possible.

Have a great evening. Until Friday (stay strong).

Hi Everyone:

P1: Students are expected to bring a draft of their trench letter to class along with the rubric and the peer assessment checklist. The planning sheet must be done as well. Please ask your son or daughter for some examples of how Canadians helped fight WWI on the home front.

P3: Students should continue to research their topic for the Mesopotamian Dragon’s Den.

P4: Complete ‘I am democracy’ poem and upload it to the e-learning site. Bring an electronic copy of the poem to class tomorrow. Begin review for Friday’s Unit 1 test (distributed in class along with an article that will be used in the test).

Have a great evening!

I hope you all had a great weekend. Sure was nice to see the sun and great to see a double double in the hockey as well!

P1: All grade 10s should have completed course registration by now. Please remind your son or daughter to bring back the signed green, orange and white forms so I can submit them to guidance. I pushed the letter due date back by a day to provide a bit more time for creativity. We will do peer editing in class on Wednesday so students will have to bring a draft with them. They should do some work on the letter tonight.

P3: Mesopotamia project started today. Students were told to check my website for the research question organizer. They should do some initial research tonight. Library period tomorrow.

P4: Students are to log in to my e-learning site to make sure that they have access. They will be uploading their I am poems to this site to cut down on paper and ink usage. As long as they can log in, there is nothing else to do with the site today. Students were asked to begin writing their I am democracy poems tonight. We will spend some time on them tomorrow. They are due Wednesday of this week.

All grade 10s should have completed course registration by now. Please remind your son or daughter to bring back the signed green, orange and white forms so I can submit them to guidance.

Have a great weekend. Here is a quote I heard the other day that I thought was pretty cool:

"Don’t get so consumed with making a living that you forget to make a life."

Here is the latest:

P1: We studied the attack on Vimy Ridge today. Students would benefit from reading the textbook page about the battle using their online textbook. Monday’s class will be devoted to planning and writing the letter from the trenches. It is not for homework this weekend (I have a planner and checklist for them to use on Monday). The due date for the letter is Wednesday of next week. The instructions are posted on my Grade 10 page.

P3: Make sure Mesopotamian maps are labelled.

P4: No homework.

Until Monday…

Harris History Update

Hi Everyone:

As I mentioned in previous emails, course selections are taking place. I am happy to hear that many students are interested in our senior history and law courses. Students need to bring back the orange and green forms to their homeroom teacher as they contain permissions-based info that you have to sign off on. If you haven’t seen these, please ask your son or daughter about them.

Here is latest:

P1: Complete research about the 2nd Battle of Ypres and the Somme using textbook and veteran interviews. The letter is due next Wednesday and the WWI test is Wednesday, March 5th.

P3: Submit questions about Mesopotamia and Egypt to the e-learning site and label the 2 maps distributed in class today (due by Friday).

P4: No homework.

That’s it for now. Have a great evening.
