turnitin permission

Hi Folks:

Below you will find the turnitin permission form that I usually send home in paper format; I am trying as much as possible to reduce the amout of paper that I distribute. Some or many of you will have already signed a form for your son or daughter like this for another class but, unfortunately, we have yet to develop a central database of turnitin permission forms. Please read the letter and let me know, one way or the other, if you will provide your consent to use turnitin with your son or daughter’s essay. If you prefer, you can print off the letter, sign it and return it to the school. Thanks.

NOTE: If you respond via email, please indicate the name of your son or daughter as well.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Turnitin.com is a very useful piece of online software that is used at both the secondary and post-secondary levels all over North America (the TVDSB is a subscriber to this service). It allows teachers to mark assignments online, saving on paper waste, and also detects errors in citation and possible plagiarism. Students under the age of 18 must have parental consent to use the program.
I would greatly appreciate it if you would give consent for your son/daughter to Turnitin.com in my history class. Turnitin.com does not ask for any personal information except a valid email address and will not “spam” inboxes. It is very safe internet-based software and no download is necessary. If you would like to see how Turnitin.com works, please check out the website at www.turnitin.com.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me a.harris or call me at the school 519-452-2750. I need this permission form back as soon as possible.
Thanks for your understanding and co-operation. Mr. Harris

Harris History Update

Here is the latest from room 128:

P2 Civics: Students completed a couple of activities related to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Homework for tomorrow is to complete Charter anticipation guide, research questions and case studies. Most student finished this in class but some still have a bit to do. Also please note that the Unit 1 test and democracy poems were returned today; please ask your son or daughter about his or her results on both. Students who missed class for the French field trip can catch up tomorrow.

P3 History: Students began work on their WWII essay. Topic selection sheet is due tomorrow for approval. The sooner students begin to research their topics, the better. Part 2 of the essay is due next Wednesday, but I recommend that students complete this portion ASAP to provide more time to complete the first draft. I have set up an essay resource page on my website; it is a sub-page of the Grade 10 page.

P4: Most students were either on a field trip or at the soccer game for the buy-in. Before the buy-in began, I distributed essay materials to all students who were present so they could at least have a look at the essay requirements. We will begin research tomorrow in the library.

Harris History: Weekend Edition

HI Everyone:

I hope you all have a great weekend–the weather looks promising!

P2 Civics: Students wrote Unit 1 test today. They have a government diagram and crossword to work on over the weekend that you might be able to help them with.

P3/4 History: Field Trip forms to go see the Great Gatsby at Westmount Theatres next Friday went home today. The cost is $13.00 and we would like as many forms back by Monday as possible to determine how many buses we need. Students wrote a practice quiz about the WWII material that has been presented so far. I recorded the marks for reference purposes but they won’t impact grades. Still, you might ask how your son or daughter did on the quiz. Students learned more about WWII today, specifically, how the Allies turned the tide of war in our favour. They may need to revisit some sections of the text, which can be accessed online. We begin our WWII research essay next week. No homework otherwise.

Have a great Saturday and Sunday.

Harris History Update

Hope you have had a chance to at least look out the window at the sunshine today. Try to get out an get some vitamin D!

P2: Review sheet for Friday’s test was distributed today. ‘I am Democracy’ poem due tomorrow.

P3/4 History: Students should be able to explain to you what the Munich Agreement was and why appeasement failed as a strategy to stop Hitler. They should also be able to explain why Canada’s entry into WWII was different from WWI. No homework.

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s email that P4 History students received their test results back yesterday.
